Russian Internal Passports.

How long your Russian internal passport is valid for depends on your age:

  • If you obtain your internal passport when you are 14 years old, it is valid until you are 20 years old (for 6 years).
  • If you get your internal passport anytime after you turn 20 years old, it will be valid until 45th birthday.
  • If you apply for an internal passport any time after your 45th birthday, it will be valid for the rest of your life.

After you turn either 20 or 45 years old, your internal passport expires on your birthday and you have 30 days to apply for a new one. If you don’t apply within this time frame, you will be fined by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The amount of the fine depends on the region. It could be between 2,000 and 5,000 rubles.

The Russian Federation also has some specific situations, besides age, where you will need to replace your Russian internal passport:

  • Any changes to your first or last name, including name changes after marriage. Also, any changes to information about your date or place of birth.
  • If your passport is lost.
  • Replacement of USSR passport.
  • If your passport is damaged or illegible.
  • Gender change.
  • Significant changes to your appearance.
  • Correction of any mistakes in the passport.

Russian Travel Passports.

As you know the Russian Federation offers two types of Russian travel passports, biometric and non-biometric;

  • Biometric travel passports are valid for 10 years after the date of issue.
  • Non-biometric travel passports are valid for 5 years after the date of issue.

The only difference between these two passports is how long they are valid and the consular fee. Whether you are traveling with a Russian non-biometric or biometric passport, they will be treated the same by any country that you are entering. You can make your decision about which passport is best for you based on your needs.

The consular fee for non-biometric passports is $30 and for biometric passports, it is $80.  Please note, that it’s not recommended to get 10-year passports for children under the age of 6.

If you are going to travel using your Russian travel passport, make sure to check the expiration day which can be found on the next row after the issue date. Some foreign countries have special requirements about how long the passport should be valid for when applying for a visa or entering that country.
